I fell off the wagon last week…

I was visiting in-laws last week and yes, I did indulge in food.  Carbs – check, more carbs – check, dessert – check and check!!  Oh I put some food away that’s for sure!  I did not count calories, but I can tell you that I did feel guilty.  If I was working out, then I wouldn’t have felt that guilty.  But I didn’t work out – at all.  I was bad.  I temporarily fell off the wagon.

My flight home was uneventful, well, except the part when the plane was landing and my sinuses were KILLING me! It felt like someone was poking a pencil above my eye. Holy crap it hurt.  The entire time I was back East, I had this nagging sinus headache that wouldn’t seem to go away with any meds that I took.  Damn allergies.  I still have the annoying headache – I guess I should call up the doc and see what prescription Rx she can give me because this is getting ridiculous!

I did do cardio this afternoon – Turbo Sport 2.  It kicked my butt.  I’ve been light on cardio since having shin splints a few weeks ago.  (I didn’t want it to turn into a fracture).  After my workout this afternoon, I did feel a little ache in my leg, so I will ice it as soon as I’m done with this post.  Seriously – how long does shin splints take to full heal???!!!!

Baggy clothes

So I’ve come to the realization that my clothes are too big for me now.  I’m down 2 sizes – but that depends on where you shop.   Some stores only sell sizes from 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12.  While other stores sells clothes in the odd sizes; 3, 5, 7, 9, 11.  If you were to combine the sizes – then technically I’m down 4 sizes.  FOUR sizes!!!! I like the sound of that.  It’s got a nice ring to it doesn’t it?

Pretty soon, I’ll have to start shopping for a new wardrobe.  I’ve been holding off because I’m still not at my goal weight.  What’s the point in buying new clothes now, when I’ll have to buy new clothes later?  Granted, my pants are really baggy on me now and I need a belt to keep them up.  The funny thing about wearing pants that are too big for you – when you put a belt on and tighten it – it looks like you have bubble butt.  Yup, that is NOT a good look – funny – but not a good look.

Are you kidding me? I can fit into a size that is TWO sizes smaller than before?!

So this past weekend I tried on some capris in a size that was two sizes smaller than what I would have worn in January.  THEY FIT! AND WERE NOT TIGHT!  Oh holy hell, I thought.  Was this mis-tagged?  Did I get a defective one?  So I had to go grab another one in the same size and try those on.  Yep – they fit!

I’ve been stepping on the scale a lot and love that I’ve been losing about a pound a week. I just never thought I’d be this close to my goal weight of 115 pounds.  Now, before you freak out and wonder how skinny does she want to be???  I’m short.  I’m only 4’11”.  My weight should be in the 105 – 115 range supposedly.  I think 105 is a bit too skinny for me.  115 is good – I’d rather have muscle definition & a flat abs than be skinny with no muscle definition.

I have yet to retake my measurements.  I’m assuming I’ve lost inches all over considering I can now take off my pants without unbuttoning them!!!!  I know, I know, it’s time to go shopping for some new clothes.  I was holding off on that.  I still have a gut though – need to really focus on that area.  The only way to do that – I need to work on my nutrition.

Well, I can’t diet.  I suck at dieting.  If I tell myself I can’t have something – I will constantly think about it.  What I have found that works for me – is to just have smaller portions.  I’ve stopped going out to lunch everyday at work.  I would hit a local Mexican place and order fish (soft) tacos.  I thought I was being healthy because it was all fresh ingredients – nothing deep-fried.  Then I found out the calorie count of the fish tacos were MORE than what I was supposed to consume in a day if I wanted to lose weight.  Oh holy hell!!!! That was an eye opener.

So I cut going out to lunch and started to bring my lunch.  I’m not very good at preparing meals to bring to work, so I usually buy frozen dinners like Safeway’s Eating Well, or Amy’s Organic frozen dinners.  I try to stick to the ones that are less than 300 calories and low in sodium, and so far it’s worked for me.  In between meals, I will have a P90x protein bar.  There are times though, that I wished I had a blender at work.  I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to make a Shakeology shake for lunch.  A chocolate peanut butter banana shake, or a chocolate cherry raspberry shake… the list goes on but those are my two absolute favorites!

Shin splints suck!

It’s a new week. I started having shin splints last Sunday – noticed them on one of the walks around the Miwuk neighborhood. On Tuesday, I noticed that the muscle, just below the knee felt like it had a knot that ached. And this was while sitting down! I thought, “Crap – that sucks!” I checked symptoms online and did a shout out on Twitter. “Sounds like shin splints” was the majority of all the messages. Damn! So I did more research on how to treat it. I had to rest my leg, ice it and stretch it. I’ve been resting it, icing it and stretching it – and it’s killing me that I can’t do my cardio workout.

On Saturday, I went to get a massage to get it fixed – or at least stretched out as much as possible. My massage therapist did the best she could in the time allotted. She said that my leg was so tight and she needed more time, so I’m going back sooner than later.

In the meantime, I’m still icing it and stretching it the best I can. I will workout tonight – but will only do Lean Circuit 1 and will go easy on lunges. Maybe I’ll throw in some PiYo and see if that will help.

I ate too much

So this past weekend was busy for me. On Saturday morning I participated in the Climb For Air vertical race (f/k/a Climb California). I’m happy to say that I beat my time from last year!! I climbed 52 floors, 104 flights of stairs, 1,197 steps all in 18 minutes 30 seconds! Boo ya! (Next year I plan on beating that time.)

The next day, around 6am, I, along with the hubby, pup, and friends, were on the way to Miwuk up in the Sierras.  One of my friend’s family owns a cabin there.

The indulgent eating began with a stop at Peet’s Coffee – before the road trip really started. I ordered a Dark Cherry Mocha – WITH whip! (Oh, so I asked for non-fat milk but really who the hell am I kidding?? It’s a freakin’ mocha!!).  I also ordered a ham and cheese croissant (but didn’t realize that the chick gave me a chocolate croissant until after we hit the open road – oh well.  Chocolate croissants are the BEST!)  One of the girls bought a bag of lemon vanilla shortbread cookies – YUMMY!!!! Oh so damn good! I’m really surprised we didn’t devour the bag in the 2 1/2 hour car ride!!!!! Last year that bag would have been empty the second I opened it!!

After about an hour, we hit the little town of Escalon and stopped for breakfast. AT. McDonalds.  Yup – you read right, at Mickey D’s. (I rarely eat fast food like that).  Everyone ordered a Mickey D’s breakfast, and my hubby went next door and ordered a breakfast sandwich that was most likely way more healthy than my msg-infused but oh so tasty breakfast.  Though, 30 minutes after eating it, I felt like I was dehydrated & bloated, like I hadn’t drank any water in hours.  (But the bloating was most likely from the the Dark Cherry Mocha I had earlier)

When we reached the cabin, we unpacked the car and decided to walk off the fast food breakfast in the neighborhood for about an hour or so.  After the walk, we drove out to the town of Twain Harte to hit their grocery store since we needed stuff for snacks before dinner.

What did we buy? A block of Irish Whiskey Cheddar for the hell of it, a bottle of Habanero tequila infused olive oil (for dinner– that oil has a KICK), bread, crackers, and many other cheeses.

The Irish Whiskey Cheddar is SO DAMN GOOD!!!!! OH.MY.GAWD.  I have to find out the name of it, so that I can find it here at home.  (But maybe it’s a good thing that Trader Joe’s doesn’t sell it here)

What did we munch on for snacks before dinner?  All the cheeses, apples and caramel sauce – which after looking at the calorie info – 100 calories per teaspoon… So how many apple slices, dunked in caramel sauce was eaten?  A lot… Calories in one glass of wine? Calories in cheese slices?  Forget it – most likely blew the calorie allowance for the day in one sitting!!!!  And that’s before dinner.

For dinner we had carnitas and a Mexican salad.  We should have had margaritas too, but instead we finished off three bottles of reds.  (We love to drink wine).

Breakfast the next day – pancakes, fruit, eggs, bacon and real maple syrup.  Lunch was all about eating the leftover carnitas and the rest of the cheese and crackers.

I know I ate more calories than I should have though.

We did do some hiking/walking around – so some calories were burned off – but that was probably the equivalent of what I ate for breakfast!!!   I have a lot of work ahead of me to loose the pounds I gained since last weekend and this week.  I have to lay off cardio since I possibly have shin splints in my left leg and it’s killing me not doing the Insanity workout!!!

I blew my time outta the water!

So I checked my time last night and I did the entrire climb in 18 minutes, 30 seconds!!!! Holy crap! I was pushing for coming in at 24 minutes!!! That’s 52 floors, 104 flights, 1,197 steps all the way to the top in 18 minutes, 30 seconds!

I did it! I finished the race!

So today was the event! Fight For Air Climb (formerly Climb California), 52 floors, 104 flights of stairs, 1,197 steps to the top of the B. of A. building.  I met the girls at the Montgomery Bart station around 10am and we walked up to the event.  Our wave time was 10:45, so we had to line up at 10:30.

The group warm up was chaotic – the music was too loud and I could barely hear the lead trainer.  So I ended up doing my own warm ups.  At that point, I started psyching myself out the closer it got for us to get to the “starting line”.  Earlier in the morning I drank a ton of water because I didn’t want to be dehydrated on this climb.  (That would suck having leg cramps on floor 20!!)  Anyways, with all the water I drank (and of course my Greenberry Shakeology with orange juice, blended with peaches) I had to pee!  Well, I felt like I had to – but I decided that it was nerves.  I was nervous because this was a big deal. No it wasn’t a marathon, I wasn’t running 26 miles.  I was only climbing 52 floors, 104 flights and 1,197 steps in a stairwell (that by the way got stinky the closer you got to the top).  But still, I was nervous.

Anyways, at the starting line at 10:45, we had to wait a couple of minutes for the group ahead of us to clear out.  Finally – we were let loose!  We only stayed together as a group for the first couple of flights, but R. took off.  She’s been training for a fitness body building competition, so I knew she would kick my ass in the stair climb.  After the first rest station, T. took off while I kept my pace and C. was close behind.

When I hit floor 10, I thought, what the hell.  I could be at home, sitting on the couch watching tv, or out for a walk along the Embarcadero.  Why the hell did I do this again?   What is wrong with me?  And where the hell are those cute fire fighters/paramedics at anyway??? HELLO! I may need some help here in a few! =)

Somewhere in the middle, (I can’t remember which floor) I decided to pick up my pace.  Well, ok, I tried to pick up my pace.  It helped listening to music while doing the climb.  Though, maybe next time I wont have songs with a fast beat?  (Try keeping step to the beat, while climbing stairs…)  I had to slow down because it felt like my lungs were going to explode.  I just kept telling myself, you’re getting closer to 52.  You’re getting closer to 52!

At one point, I got stuck behind a group of guys who were blocking my way.  After climbing that high, people tend to get a little ripe.  Yes, the guys were ripe and I was stuck behind them.  Thankfully, there was a rest station and I was able to get away from them.  Otherwise, I probably would have thrown in the white flag and asked to take the elevator the rest of the way.

Because I wanted to beat my time from last year (25:26), I didn’t stop at every rest station.  Which, I probably should have.  Other than the heavy breathing, I felt ok until about floor 48.  My right shoulder-blade started cramping up, which I thought was weird, considering I thought my leg would be the one to cramp up. So, I kept my right arm at my side the rest of the climb.  I thought – great, so close to the end and I go down from a shoulder-blade cramp!  (And where the hell were those cute fire fighters/paramedics???!)

Finally, when I saw the sign for the 51st floor – I got my second wind.  I wanted to sprint up those steps, but got stopped because there was a professional photographer taking everyone’s pictures at the top.   Great – after climbing 52 floors, 104 flights, 1,197 steps, one doesn’t exactly look fresh.  I’m sure I looked like a hot mess!  But it’s proof that I did it! I finished the Fight For Air vertical race – and I did it with some great ladies! Thank you C., T., and R.  You ladies rock and I’m so glad that we were a team!  So, who wants to do it again next year?  East Bay Fit Club is accepting new members.  =)

Start of ChaLEAN Extreme Lean Phase

This past weekend, I bought some adjustable weights thinking I’d be able to do 12 lbs no problem.  I really want the Select Tecs that Chalene uses in the workout – but those cost about $400!  Maybe next year.

Anyway, I started the Lean Phase this week.  WOW!  I did Lean Circuit 1 Monday night.  Lots of triceps work.  I thought that I could go heavier than what I was doing on the Push Phase.  (I was lifting 10 lbs weights with no problem). I was pumped! The 10 lbs weights were easy while I was in the Push Phase.  Then I picked up the 12 lbs weights…. Whoa!  Holy crapola!  I sooooo couldn’t do the workout properly.  I had to put the weights down and go back to the 10 lbs.  I need to buy the 1 pound weights that I could add onto the adjustable weights I have.  I’m sure I could lift 11 lbs easily – at least I hope so.   Two days later, I can really feel the soreness in my triceps.  It’s not a bad thing.  I can tell I really worked the muscles.

Tonight will be Lean Circuit 2, plus Ab Burner.  We shall see how that goes.
